  • Have your lawn mower serviced so it’s running well. You might want to do this in February or March to “beat the rush”.
  • Mow your lawn at 2 to 2½ inches, removing no more than one-third of the leaf blade.
  • Overseeding of your lawn to get new grass established before the hot weather.
  • Leave your grass clippings on the lawn to return nutrients to soil
  • Crabgrass control to stop the seeds from germinating.
  • Weed control for broadleaf weeds such as dandelions.
  • Clean up debris from your lawn.
  • Dethatching
  • Fertilization
  • Overseeding

If you have fertilized and taken care of grass in the spring, your summer grass should be lush and able to handle periods of heat and drought.

  • Irrigation and watering as needed. It is better to water your lawn thoroughly once a week than to give it just a little bit of water every day.
  • Mow slightly higher than you were during spring. Mow often enough so that you don’t remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade.
  • Do not fertilize during periods of intense heat.
  • Postemergence broadleaf weed control.
  • Grub control in early June.
  • Monitoring for pests.

  • Rake as many leaves out of your lawn as you can before they freeze in place over winter.
  • Fall is also a great time to perform your overseeding during cool temperatures.
  • Continue to mow until your grass goes dormant in approximately November.
  • Go after perennial weeds when they are at their weakest.
